Slamarack: each year, more and more surfers are willing to take the risk and paddle out at Carlsbad's Tamarack Surf Beach

If you’ve ever wondered what happens when several hundred surfers decide to abandon all sense of order and charge the same wave at the same time, Carlsbad has your answer. It’s the Slamarack.

Held at the infamous Tamarack surf break, Slamarack 2025 delivered everything it’s known for: sun, waves, soft tops, and total mayhem.

Imagine Spain’s very own running of the bulls, except the bulls are foam boards, and everyone’s running straight into each other – voluntarily.

By 9 am, the sand at Tamarack was packed with an army of grinning participants.

You’d find groms in neon rash guards, dads on vacation pretending they’re 20 again, and a brave handful of spectators ready to risk being collateral damage in the shore break.

The rules? Simple. Everyone paddles. Everyone goes. On every wave.

What follows can only be described as aquatic anarchy.

From the safety of dry sand, you’ll see arms flailing, boards flying, and laughter echoing over the whitewater.

Some made it to their feet. Some made it halfway. Most made it straight to the bottom of the pile. But that’s kind of the point.

Boards Were Broken, Friendships Were Forged

Between the nose dives and board bonks, there were moments of magic.

Kids riding the same wave and throwing accidental high-five. Surfers leaping from board to board. Inflatables getting run over by surfboards and fins.

And daring individuals attempting backflip dismounts that drew audible gasps from the crowd.

First aid kits were on standby, and they didn’t sit idle.

There were bruises, sprains, and at least one extremely confused pelican caught in the crossfire. But spirits remained high.

Even those hobbling back to their beach chairs did so with a smile and a story.

Soft Tops, Hard Laughs

What started years ago as a quirky local tradition has now become a full-blown cultural moment.

Social media hype from the beloved @kookslams Instagram account fueled this year’s turnout, turning Slamarack into a who’s-who of SoCal surf mischief.

It’s like the apocalypse of surfing, but everyone’s stoked about it.

It’s probably the only place and time where participants proudly sport cracked foam boards like battle trophies.

Surfing also has a place for this community chaos powered by unfiltered fun. Yes, the messy and the absurd and the completely unnecessary are also part of the spirit.

Slamarack takes the concept of party wave to the limits and plays it over and over again.

Until next year, stay weird.
